Today I prepared a fun and creative art activity inspired by the unique paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. This activity allows children to explore famous art in a playful way while creating their own imaginative portraits using fruits and vegetables.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian Renaissance painter known for his extraordinary portraits made entirely from fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other natural objects. At first glance his paintings may look like a collection of produce, but when viewed together they form a complete human face. Because of this clever visual illusion, his artworks are especially engaging and fascinating for children.
For this art activity, I prepared a 7-page printable set that encourages children to look closely at shapes and creatively build their own Arcimboldo-style portrait.
1. Fruit & Vegetable Image Pages (4 pages)
These pages include a variety of fruits and vegetables that children can cut out and use as creative art materials. Each piece can become part of a face such as eyes, hair, cheeks, or even a funny hat.
2. Hidden Portrait Templates (3 pages)
These pages show artworks where parts of the head or face are intentionally hidden. Children can complete the missing areas by arranging fruits and vegetables to form a unique portrait.

How the Activity Works
Children first cut out the fruit and vegetable images. Then they observe the partially hidden portrait and think about how different shapes could become parts of a face. A carrot might turn into a nose, grapes could become hair, and a pumpkin might form the cheek or chin.
There is no single correct answer, which makes this activity perfect for encouraging imagination and creative thinking. Every child will create a completely different portrait.
