Fall Art Activity: How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Scarecrow
Creating a scarecrow out of a simple toilet paper roll is a fun and engaging fall art activity perfect for children and classroom projects. This craft uses everyday materials to celebrate the colors and themes of autumn while encouraging creativity and hands-on learning.
To make the scarecrow, start with an empty toilet paper roll as the body. Add a face using markers or stickers, then decorate it with a small paper hat, fabric scraps, or colored construction paper. You can create straw-like hair and arms by gluing on pieces of yarn or shredded paper. Finish by adding fall-themed details such as tiny leaves, plaid patterns, or a miniature pumpkin accessory.
This activity helps develop fine motor skills, imagination, and seasonal awareness. It’s an excellent project for classrooms, art centers, or at-home crafts, bringing the warm and cozy spirit of autumn to any space.

Materials: You will need the template, a toilet paper roll, markers, scissors, and glue. The template includes both coloring pages and drawing versions. You can download the template from the DrawinArt link below!

Decorate the scarecrow’s clothes by drawing freely on the template. Scarecrows are known for wearing patched and ragged clothes. In traditional farming communities, they were made by sewing together old, discarded clothing. It may be helpful to look at real scarecrow photos while drawing.

Today’s main material: the toilet paper roll! Toilet paper rolls are widely used in various craft activities. If you often enjoy indoor play with your child, don’t throw them away—save them! DRAWINART also introduces many different activities that use toilet paper rolls.

Attach the template to the toilet paper roll. The template includes four different scarecrow outfits. You can also let your child create their own clothes using colored paper. Another fun idea is to collect scrap fabric, newspaper, or flyers and create a collage-style patched outfit.

Next, make the scarecrow’s hat using origami. You can find the folding instructions in the DrawinArt YouTube link below! Making a hat isn’t required, but we added one to represent the scarecrow’s signature straw hat.

Then, create the scarecrow’s hair using colored paper. Prepare a rectangular piece of colored paper, cut several slits along one end with scissors, and roll it up to form the hair.

Attach the hat with double-sided tape, draw a face, and you’re done! Making a scarecrow with a toilet paper roll is simple and fun!

Make several scarecrows wearing different outfits and stand them up together. You can also create a rice field using colored paper as a connected activity. We hope you enjoy learning about scarecrows—symbols of autumn—and have a wonderful time with this seasonal art project!
