Let me introduce a fun underground art activity that's perfect to do with a child who loves insects! Did you know that many kinds of insects live underground? Today, we're going to draw an ant's home and use a little shovel to move around some special ant snacks. It's a great activity to pair with a storybook about ants, so why not dive into this playful underground art adventure together?

You can find and download the template from the link below—just click and you’re all set to get started!

For this activity, you’ll need scissors, double-sided tape or glue, a template, ice cream sticks, markers, a tissue roll core, and some nuts. You can find the template at the Drawing Art Smart Store linked below! Along with the drawing template, we’ll also send you a PDF that includes a sample of the finished artwork for you to use as a reference.

After printing the template on A4 paper, carefully join the top and bottom parts by gluing or taping them together. This will complete the full picture and get it ready for your activity.

Now, let’s use a marker to draw the ants’ home under the ground. You can gently guide your child to imagine and draw wiggly tunnels and cozy rooms—just the way ants might build them!
If you’d like a little help, here’s a simple tip from DRAWINART
: start by using a pencil to draw lines and circles to plan out the ant house. Then, go over the lines and make the tunnels a bit thicker so they look like real paths ants might crawl through.

Once the sketch is finished, go over the lines with a marker to make them nice and bold!

Now, let’s take a tissue roll and carefully cut it into rings about 2cm wide. This will help us make fun little tunnels for the ants to crawl through!

Now, take each piece of the tissue roll and use some double-sided tape to turn it into a little ring. Just press the ends together so it makes a small circle—like a tiny tunnel the ants can go through!

Now, take the scissors and carefully cut small notches on the side of the tissue roll. Once you’ve done that, attach the ice cream stick to make a fun little shovel for the ants!

Now, gather some nuts for the activity! If you don’t have any, no worries—you can use small pom-poms or even scrunched-up colorful paper instead. And if your child isn’t used to eating nuts, this could be a fun way to help them get a little more familiar with them while enjoying the art project!

Now, place the nuts inside the little shovel you made with the tissue roll. With a lot of focus, move your hand carefully along the tunnel to bring the nuts to the ant’s cozy home. It’s like you’re helping the ants gather food!
This underground art activity helps your child develop fine motor skills while also strengthening focus. You can explore the insects that live below the ground and even draw new ones to create your own fun templates!
I’ll be back next time with more exciting art activities from DRAWINART—can’t wait to share them with you!
